How To Maintain A Consistent Skincare Routine
Combination skin manages to be both dry and oily at the same time. Not quite the dermatological jackpot (we see you, normal skin types), but with the right skin care routine, your dry and oily skin can live in harmony.
Without a doubt, this skin type can be difficult, but here’s how to elevate your combination skin care routine.
What is it? Combination skin is a skin type where you have areas of both dry skin and oily skin. This happens because some parts of the face produce too much sebum and other areas don’t produce enough.
What causes it? Genetics are mainly to blame, but the environment (ie dry winters and hot summers) and hormonal changes can also affect your skin.
Best Skin Care Routine For Dry Skin
Managing combination skin requires a daily skin care regimen designed to create more balanced skin, says Dr. Jen Haley, board-certified dermatologist and host of the Radiance Revealed Podcast.
“Combination skin is often oilier in the summer and drier in the winter, while in the fall and spring people with combination skin have an oily T-zone and dry cheeks,” adds Dr. Jeannette Graf, dermatologist and certified clinical assistant professor. of Dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
1. Clean. “In the morning, it’s important to use a cleanser first to remove any build-up that may have happened overnight,” says Haley.
2. Tuna. “Then you can use a toner to remove the oil that the cleanser might have missed,” adds Haley. This is optional, depending on the needs of the skin and includes gentle exfoliants. Just always opt for an alcohol-free toner and avoid using it on dry areas.

3. Moisturize. “The next step is important and may be where you make the biggest change to your routine: When moisturizing, on dry areas of skin, choose a moisturizer and for oily sections, use a lighter, water-based cream. formula,” adds Haley.
1. Clean. “In the evening, it can help to opt for a gel or foam cleanser that’s designed to remove excess oil that may build up throughout the day,” says Dr. Marisa Garshick, a dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology in New York. “However, it should still be formulated with moisturizing ingredients to help nourish the skin.”
2. Exfoliate. Consider exfoliating with a chemical exfoliant about once a week to help remove dead skin cells and clear congested skin.
3. Treat. You can use various serums and treatments for your unique skin needs. But Garshick generally recommends a retinoid to help regulate skin cell turnover and prevent clogged pores. Hyaluronic acid serums can also help lock in moisture without making things greasy.

If you want to keep things simple in your skincare routine, choose a gentle cleanser, hyaluronic acid serums, a moisturizer and SPF. And don’t forget to exfoliate once a week. Continuing my series of cheap and cheerful skin care products, this post focuses on the combination skin type or those who live in warmer and/or more humid climates. Or, if heavy creams just aren’t your thing, here are some great skin care options that are refreshing but still effective!
A reminder that when it comes to skin care, you really need 4 steps: cleanser, serum, moisturizer and sunscreen in the morning. And if you have to splurge on one product, it would be serum – sure there are expensive products in every category, but with serums you get the best bang for your buck.
That being said, this post will keep everything, even serums, under $25 with some options under $10!
Although it lathers up nicely, it doesn’t leave your skin feeling dry or stripped at all. If Cerave is too boring for you, this is a great alternative. It has a gel texture with a light foaming action, gentle surfactants and similar skin-supporting ingredients to Cerave. The two also offer similar experiences and results, but Byoma comes in a fun yellow bottle that allows for refills!
